I am required to write the case files of patients in the ward assigned to me. Now I am posted in medicine female ward. After today’s rounds, I went near an old (above 60 years) lady to complete her case file. She had a heart attack and was also suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and valvular heart disease.
“Hi, how are you feeling today? How’s your chest pain?”
“I am felling Ok, free from chest pain”
“Hmm… (searching for next question), so how did this chest pain start?”
“Well, two days back while I was passing urine, I felt a chest discomfort. Somehow I managed to get up from there and reached my bed. As usual I put a tablet under my tongue.”
“Didn’t you inform your son at that time?”
“No, I thought it will pass away. My son is working hard to make the ends meet ….. I don’t want to trouble him with my petty chest pain”
“Then…..”
“The chest pain didn’t cease. Then I informed my son and my daughter in law went to inform the doctor. This doctor is very dear to me; he listens to me and cares for me. He came and advised my son to transfer me to a hospital with an ICCU”
“I protested. I told the doctor to give me some medicines to kill the pain, but he stood his ground”
“Why did you protest?” I asked bewildered.
“You know, admission in an ICU will cost at least 200 rupees per day and someone has to be there with me in the hospital. This will only add to the burden of my son. My children are a blessing in my life. They take care of my needs through thick and thin. My daughters in laws are like my own daughters. God has given me a beautiful family, my time is near and I don’t want to trouble them anymore”
While suffering from great physical pain, this mother of four doesn’t want to disturb the peace and joy of her home and puts a smile on her face. A rosary in her hand, she prays for her children, the doctors who are looking after her and other patients in the ward.
I found a living example of grace under pressure.
