Malady to melody

I am posted in labor room for the time being. Although I have assisted more than 50 deliveries during my student life, I haven’t conducted one. My chance to do one came two days back.

I was in charge of her. Let’s call her Rose. So I was monitoring Rose for more than 4 hours. Her belly is enlarged, as if she had swallowed a large water melon and obviously she is in distress. She cries out with pain when the contractions come. When she cries out I go near her and examines her vagina for signs of impeding delivery. After sometime her screams reached a crescendo, baby’s head was stretching her vagina. We shifted her to the stage II room, where we conduct delivery.

She was still screaming. Although she had been given an enema earlier to evacuate her bowels, she passed little bit of stool. I was chosen to conduct the labor. I was bit nervous, the senior PG was nearby. Anyway I can’t show that to Rose, so I put up a confident face and asked her to move down on the cot.

I gave her an injection of local anesthesia near her vagina and put an incision over that area (episiotomy). She was in great pain. We asked her to strain more. Yep, the baby came out. It’s a boy and he cried immediately. In a moment Rose’s pain was gone and she smiled, tears came down her face. After cutting the umbilical cord, we brought the baby to her. Rose kissed her child and we all smiled.

It was a great relief. So my first labor had a happy ending.
After seeing all the struggles though which a women goes in the process of giving birth to a child, my respect to my mother increased.

I salute all mothers.

@bvn

Welcome to my blog. Many guys like maths. I got admission for eng and med but due to parental pressure I chose med. Now I don't regret it.

@Rose

Yes its an amazing experience. But to get the whole picture you have to see the anxiety of the husband. I have seen many husbands waiting anxiously for their sweet child and wife. You have to see their facial expressions!

@ Priya

I was very much tensed coz it was my first delivery. You know these baby's are slimy, I feared that the baby might slip off my hand!

@ silverine

I agree with you,bringing up a child is a life long endevour. My mother might have lost weight running after me to stop my pranks.

@ starry nights

I too fainted after seeing a delivery for the first time during my third year. I still have a stich mark below my eyebrow, reminding me about that tragedy / comedy. My friends celebrated it. There were many versions regarding the cause of my fainting episode. Some said that I couldn't stand the sight of female genetelia. Some said that I couldn't bear the trauma and so on...

:-) well I have conducted more than 20 deliveries & I can say I am glad i ain't a woman!! yet each & everyone of them was fun. In the 4-5 hours before phase 2 I used to joke with the soon-would-be mothers on Men are this & women are that issues which had them do all these efforts to answer back & as we al laughed, they did forget the pain momentarily. Anyways the part I hate most is wrapping up the episiotomy afterwards :-S it is TOUGH to find all the right layers for the deep stiches!

i enjoyed this post...so its true that almost all of the pain women experience during childbirth is forgotten when they see the baby...thats encouraging to hear for females like me who havent gone through that experience yet!

Oh..it's a short description compared to what a traumatic experience it is. I remember the first delivery I saw. I felt so bad about women.
I salute all women.
A man could never do this.
