Certifying Death

“Doctor, there is a ward call. Michael, 24 is gasping; Ward no 1”

I rushed to the ward; he was lying on cot apparently not taking breath. I palpated for his pulse, 56 per minute, heard normal breath sounds through the stethescope. Relieved, I told his mother that there is nothing to worry for the moment, a sense of relief appeared on her face. Then I took the case file and found that the patient is suffering from diseases pertaining to his kidney and lungs.

Suddenly, Michael moved his left arm for the first time in two days. Quite happy I told the relatives that he is recovering. Then suddenly he stopped breathing.

“Sister, ambu bag ventilation”, I screamed

“push adrenaline”

I started cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

There was no pulse, no heart sounds, his pupils were dialated.

That was his last breath.

“We did everything that we can, he is no more.” I saw tears running down the cheeks of his mother.
