According to Freud, human psyche consists of:
Id: our instinctive urges, sex, aggression and other primary processes
Ego: rational and language based executors linking to reality
Superego: the conscience, the moral police man
While I was posted in a peripheral hospital, a middle aged beautiful lady (whose husband was working abroad) and her 5 year old son came to my out patient clinic. The boy had cough, after examining him I prescribed a cough syrup and an antibiotic.
Then the lady made the boy stand up and sat on the patient's chair. She told me that she has chest discomfort. I auscultated her chest with my stethoscope and found that there was no abnormality.I conveyed this information to her, and then she said that she is having pain in the breast. I shifted her to the examining room and inspected her breast. There were no visible abnormalities. Then I started palpating her breast for any palpable mass. She touched my hand and pressed it hard on her breast and closed her eyes. My professional ethics and my conscience wanted to withdraw my hand but my Id wanted to keep it there. There was a battle going on in my mind between my Id and superego. At last superego won the battle. I withdrew my hand and went out of the room.
