According to our hospital policy, bystanders of patient are not allowed to enter the medicine intensive care unit (ICU), except for certain things like, to feed the patient or to empty the urobag. In our part of the world when a person is admitted in ICU, his relatives and friends flock from different parts of the state to see him. But when they get there, they are faced with the problem – they can’t see the patient.
The first question is why they want to see a person who is suffering from illness?
They want to show that they care for him/her. (Some people are genuine in this aspect).
So they will play some games to enter into the ICU.
Game no. 1. Peek a boo. They will peek though the door and say “Hi” to the patient.
Game no.2. One relative will enter the ICU to take urine from urobag and another relative will come in later to replace it.
Game no. 3. A person comes from a far off place and all the above mentioned games have been played. He will fill a glass with water and come inside and say that he felt that the patient was thirsty.
Once a lady entered the ICU, her relative was fast asleep in the bed. (He had a heart attack). She went near him, woke him up and started crying in front of him!
My first response was to laugh, but I controlled my urge. She just wanted to show that she came to see him and was much worried about his illness. After all what is the fun in coming all the way to see the patient, if the patient didn’t see her.
